Fractions are a part of whole. A whole can be an object, shape or a group of objects.

Numerator and Denominator

Types of Fractions

There are 6 types of Fractions:-

  • Proper fractions
  • Improper fractions
  • Mixed fractions
  • Equivalent fractions
  • Like fractions
  • Unlike fractions
  • Proper fractions:-

In Proper fractions the numerator is less than the denominator. Eg. ¼.

  • Improper fractions:-

In Improper fractions the numerator is greater than the denominator.

  • Mixed fractions:-

Mixed fractions are a mix of the integer part and a proper noun. Eg. 1¼.

  • Equivalent fractions:-

When we multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of fraction by the same number, then the fraction we get is called equivalent fraction to the first one. Eg. ¼ and 2/8 are equivalent fractions.

  • Like fractions:-

Fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions.

  • Unlike fractions:-

Fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions.

How to convert Improper fractions to mixed fractions

  • Divide the numerator with the denominator.
  • The quotient(answer) is the number.
  • The divisor is the denominator.
  • And the remainder is the numerator.
